OFFLINE ROAD-TRIP PACK

Oman essentials, even when the signal disappears.

Save the practical pages you are most likely to need in the mountains, desert or on long drives. After one download, this pack works from your browser in airplane mode.

What gets saved

This pack saves the Oman Essentials homepage, this offline road-trip card and every practical guide in English. Clearing browser site data removes the saved copy.

BEFORE YOU DRIVE

Before you leave reliable Wi-Fi

  • Download an offline map for the whole route, not just the next town.
  • Screenshot your accommodation address, phone number and map pin.
  • Save your rental company’s roadside-assistance number and contract details.
  • Fill up before remote mountain or desert sections and carry drinking water.
  • Save the Oman emergency number: 9999.
  • If weather looks unstable, re-check wadi and mountain conditions before losing signal.

4X4 DECISION CARD

Where 4WD matters

1
Jebel Akhdar

Plan on a 4WD. Official Oman tourism material treats the mountain ascent as a 4WD route and access controls are used.

2
A’Sharqiyah Sands

Use a high-clearance 4WD for dune driving. If you lack desert-driving experience, arrange an escort, camp transfer or guide.

3
Empty Quarter

4WD and proper remote-travel planning are essential.

4
Muscat → Nizwa / Sur on normal highways

A standard 2WD is normally enough for the paved route.

5
Jebel Shams / mountain side roads

Conditions vary by exact route. Check the road and your rental terms before assuming a normal car is suitable.

EMERGENCY

If you have no data

📞 Emergency

Royal Oman Police emergency number: 9999.

⛽ Fuel

Do not enter a remote section near empty. Save the next fuel stop before leaving coverage.

💧 Water

Carry more water than you expect to use, especially for desert or mountain drives.

🌧️ Wadis

Never camp in a flood channel. Flash flooding can make a dry-looking wadi dangerous very quickly.

MOBILE DATA

Local data is useful — but not a safety system

Ooredoo currently advertises tourist plans starting from OMR 5. Omantel also sells a 30-day Tourist SIM. That makes local data reasonably accessible, but no mobile plan guarantees usable coverage on every mountain or desert route.

ARRIVAL

Muscat Airport without data

✈️ Bus

Mwasalat Route A1 serves Muscat International Airport and continues toward Ruwi.

🚕 Taxi

If your phone will not connect, use the airport’s licensed taxi options rather than relying on an app.

🚗 Rental car

If the road trip starts immediately, save the rental desk and first hotel location before landing.

MONEY

Road-trip money card

  • Currency: Omani rial (OMR).
  • Cards and contactless payments are common in cities and larger businesses.
  • Keep some cash for small shops, local services and a payment failure away from Muscat.
  • Carry a second physical card for rental deposits and backup.
